Open a source
There are two ways in:
- In the Sources panel, click Open in reader on any source.
- Or, while writing, hold ⌘ (Ctrl on Windows) and click a citation — it opens that source.
The reader appears in a window over your draft. Drag its title bar to move it, or drag a corner to resize.
No PDF yet?
If Folio hasn't found a PDF for the source, you'll see two options:
- Find PDF online — Folio searches for a freely available copy.
- Upload PDF — choose a file from your computer.
If neither applies, you'll still see the source's extracted text to read and quote from.
Insert a quote
Select any passage in the PDF, then choose:
- Block quote — sets it as an indented quotation.
- Narrative — weaves it into your sentence, in quotation marks.
Either way, Folio adds the in-text citation and the page number automatically. The quote will show as verified in Quote Check, because it came directly from the source.
Ask about the source
Switch the reader to the Ask tab to ask questions about the paper you're reading. Answers are drawn only from that source. Found a useful one? Save as note keeps it with the source.
